During an Alabama DUI Stop, Here’s What You Can Do…

1 – Be polite and responsive.

When the traffic officer approaches your vehicle, it’s generally advisable to address the officer as “sir” or “ma’am” and to be forthcoming with things like your driver’s license, vehicle registration and auto insurance card.

One of the first things that these traffic cops will look for is how “together” versus disoriented you appear (with disorientation pointing to possible intoxication). So, having these items ready and responding to officers’ initial questions clearly and respectfully is always a wise idea.

2 – Remain calm and try to remember officers’ perspective.

Getting pulled over or stopped at sobriety checkpoints can be as frustrating as it may be unnerving, especially if you have not interacted that much with police before. If you find yourself starting to get nervous or freaked out, however, do your best to:

  • Calm yourself – You won’t be able to think or act clearly if you let your nerves get the better of you. In fact, you may even say things you don’t mean if you end up becoming too upset. So, don’t let this happen.
  • Understand that officers may be abrasive with you – Cops are used to dealing with combativeness, and they may come into an Alabama DUI stop thinking you are guilty. So, don’t take it personally, and try not to let it impact the way you talk to officers and/or behave during the stop.
