After a second DUI conviction in the state of Alabama, people can be sentenced to some combination of the following DUI penalties:

  • Jail time – A minimum of 5 days in jail will be required for people convicted of DUI for a second time.
  • Court fines – The court will typically order people convicted of a second DUI in Alabama to pay fines between $1,100 and $5,100.
  • Drivers’ license suspensions – People convicted of a second DUI will usually lose their driving privileges for at least one year (though this can be extended, depending on the specifics of the case).
  • Community service – At least 30 days of community service will be ordered. In some cases, additional community service may be added to a person’s sentence to replace any possible jail time for the convicted individual.
  • Other likely penalties – In addition to the above-described penalties for a second DUI conviction in Alabama, people may also be ordered by the courts to attend alcohol education classes and/or serve probation for some period of time.During probation, people will likely be required to refrain from drinking alcohol, and they may even be required to regularly meet with a probation officer to ensure their compliance with the various terms of probation for their DUI case.

It’s important to point out that factors like a DUI accident in a second case – as well as injuries or even death to others as a result of the DUI – can substantially increase the severity of the penalties for a second DUI case.
