A raid on a Homewood home has led to the seizure of more than 83lbs of marijuana and drug trafficking charges being filed against two men.

After a one month-long investigation, Irondale law enforcement officials raided a Homewood house earlier this month, leading to the seizure of at least 83.4 pounds of marijuana, cash and guns. According to the official police report associated with this case, this raid led to the arrest of two men, who officials have described as “middle men,” who are now facing multiple criminal charges, including drug trafficking charges.

While investigators have not disclosed what led them to start focusing on the arrested individuals, they have explained that:

  • More than 83 pounds of marijuana were found in the raided home in vacuum-sealed bags, jars and other containers. This amount of drugs reportedly has a street value of at least $290,000.
  • $15,000 in cash, two handguns and one assault rifle were also confiscated from the raided home.
  • While the seized marijuana will be destroyed (as required by state law), the money and guns will be formally appropriated by law enforcement authorities through the court system.

The two arrested individuals, who are still in custody on a $200,000 bail each, reportedly had transported the drugs to Alabama from California and could be facing federal drug trafficking charges when this case ultimately comes before the judge.

Federal Drug Trafficking Charges: A Closer Look at the Potential Penalties

In the event that these two men end up facing federal drug trafficking charges, they could be looking at some minimum mandatory prison time if they are ultimately convicted. In particular, the federal minimum mandatory sentence for this case could end up being:

  • 5 years in federal prison if this is a first offense
  • 10 years in federal prison if this is a subsequent offense.

Given the fact, however, that authorities believe that the arrested men were “middle men” in a larger drug trafficking operation, it may be possible for these men to work out plea deals with prosecutors to lessen their potential sentences.
