Did you that, every 7 minutes, someone in the U.S. is hurt in a pedestrian accident? Here are more important stats and facts about pedestrian accidents.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), which is a division of the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT), keeps detailed records about the rates at which pedestrian accidents occur in the U.S. annually.

According to the latest pedestrian accident statistics from the NHTSA:

  • More than 4,700 people died in fatal pedestrian accidents in 2012 (the most recent year for which complete stats are currently available). Through extrapolation, this means that, about every 2 hours, someone in the U.S. dies in a pedestrian accident.
  • In 2012, fatal pedestrian accidents accounted for about 14 percent of all traffic accident deaths in the U.S.
  • On average, about 76,000 people are hurt in pedestrian accidents each year in the U.S. Through extrapolation, this means that, about every 7 minutes, someone in the U.S. is hurt in a pedestrian accident.
  • Pedestrians are about 1.5 times more likely (than people traveling in passenger vehicles) to be hurt in a traffic accident.

2 – There has been an increase in pedestrian accidents over recent years.

While the above statistics regarding pedestrian accidents may be shocking, what may be just as distressing is the fact that pedestrian accidents have been occurring more often in recent years. In fact, as the NHTSA has found, the occurrence of fatal pedestrian accidents increased by approximately 6 percent from 2011 to 2012.

We’ll reveal some more critical stats and facts about pedestrian accidents in the two upcoming parts of this blog series that will be published soon. Be sure to check them out!
