In the unfortunate event that a person is convicted of drunk driving for a third time in Alabama, the following is what can be expected in terms of court-ordered penalties:

  • Jail time – Convicted individuals will be required to spend at least 60 days in jail; however, this jail sentence can be substantially increased if the DUI involved an accident, injuries or even fatalities.
  • Court fines – These will usually be between $2,100 and $10,000, according to the specifics of the case. Here, it’s important to point out that the costs of multiple DUIs in Alabama are not limited to simply the court ordered penalties. Having to pay for court-ordered alcohol education programs, the reinstatement of a driver’s license, etc. will add to the costs of a DUI conviction.
  • Drivers’ license suspensions – People convicted of a third DUI in Alabama will typically lose their driving privileges for at least 3 years. Depending on the specifics of a case, it may be possible for some people to get a provisional or limited driver’s license reinstated early if, for instance, they have an ignition interlock device installed on their vehicles.
  • Community service – While the law does not specifically dictate how much community service a person should perform in the event he’s convicted of a third DUI, these obligations are usually substantial and can be upwards of 30 days.
  • Other likely penalties – Having to attend alcohol education classes and/or a court-ordered substance abuse program may be another penalty that people convicted of DUI for the third time have to deal with.

For an overview of the penalties typically associated with a fourth DUI conviction in Alabama, be sure to check out the conclusion to this blog series that will be posted soon.
